October 15th 2009 GUNSMOKE TRIO
Another great concert was the order of this evening as John, Richard and Raymond treated us once more to their superb harmonies and fine backing, very reminiscent of the Sons Of The Pioneers who appeared with Gene Autry and Roy Rogers and others on those Saturday morning cowboy sagas. Tonight they covered songs from the catalogues of Merle Haggard, Don Gibson, Willie Nelson, Don Williams,John Denver, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and others, as well as including at least half a dozen of their own compositions. Other numbers included The Oakridge Boys, Y'all Come Back Saloon, Hank Williams', Settin' The Woods On Fire, Johnny Cash's, The Ways Of A Woman In Love, and Folsom Prison Blues, Vaughn Monroe's, Ghost Riders In The Sky, Randy Travis's, Diggin' Up bones and to bring this fine show to an end, Ricky Nelson's, Hello Mary Lou. Dancers and listeners alike showed enthusiastic appreciation of the performance, confirming Gunsmoke's popularity here. Cyril Insley

One of our favourite groups were in attendance tonight and as before, John, Raymond and Richard gave us a smashing show with their close harmonies and fine instrumentation, every song being well appreciated by our members. Again their concert was a good mix of old and new with a few of their own compositions included for good measure. Amongst the numbers delivered were, Don't Fence Me In, a hit for Gene Autry in 1945, Dick Feller's, Some Days Are Diamonds, a hit for John Denver, Bob McDill's, Don't Close Your Eyes, a no 1 for the late Keith Whitley, Merle Haggard's, Ramblin' Man, Randy Travis', On The Other Hand, Don Williams', Some Broken Hearts Never Mend, Garth Brooks', Not Counting You, and George Strait's, Brothers Of The Highway. The consistently high standard of Gunsmoke concerts ensures a regular spot at our club. October 18th 2007 .. GUNSMOKE TRIOIt was a welcome return tonight for this Doncaster Trio following their debut concert at our club in march this year, John, Raymond and Richard, splendidly attired, gave us another super show of great close harmony vocals and excellent instrumentation with their versions of country songs old and new.
This evening's performance began with Kenny Rogers1979 No 1, Coward Of The County, followed by the 2002 chart topper from Toby Keith and Willie Nelson, Beer For My Horses, and the timeless classic, Jambalaya, a hit for Hank Williams, Fats Domino, Blue Ridge Rangers ( Alias John Foggerty), The Carpenters and a Dutch husband and wife duo, Saskin and Serge.
The non - stop show continued in similar vein throughout, but tonight the lads gave us a couple of songs written by John and Richard from their latest cd of self penned numbers, My Friend The Bottle, ( CD title ) and Country Roots, just two of twelve great compositions.
Also heard tonight and keeping both dancers and listeners happy, were Merle's, Ramblin Fever, Kris Kristofferson's, Me And Bobby McGee ( a hit for Roger Miller ), Don Williams', Tulsa Time, Garth Brooks', If Tomorrow Never Comes, George Strait's, All My Ex's Live In Texas, Johnny Russell's, Act Naturally, ( a hit for Buck Owens and Ringo Starr ) and Ricky Nelson's, Hello Mary Lou. However what made the night more memorable for me was their version of a song from my favourite country singer, Marty Robbins, A Hundred And Sixty Acres, a track from the platinum selling album, Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs.
After shows such as this, I am sure we will be seeing Gunsmoke at the Northern Renegades again.

March 15th 2007 GUNSMOKE TRIO
Tonight's entertainment was provided by a Trio of gentlemen from Doncaster. Newcomers to our club, they were John on vocals, Richard on lead guitar and Raymond on electric bass. Each played in bands in the early sixties and came together inthe five piece band , 'Johnny and the Apaches', in 1962 where they remained until 1969.
Before this, Richard had performed in ' The Bluestars' and his three minutes of fame was an appearance on Jimmy Young's 625 TV show at the age of sixteen. During this time they played Pop and Rock 'n' Roll music from the fifties and sixties.
They met again at John's fiftieth birthday party which re-generated the possibility of playing together again, which they eventually decided to do five years ago. For the first three years the revived 50's / 60's music but for the last couple they have concentrated on Country music.
Their programme was a lovely mix of old and new country and all were enthusiasticly received by listeners and dancers alike.
Starting with Don Gibson's, Oh Lonesome Me, they continued with other classics including Don Williams', You're My Best Friend, Hank Williams', Setting The Woods On Fire, Jerry Lee's, What Made Milwaukie Famous and Johnny Cash's, Folsom Prison Blues.
Bringing us more up to date they continued with Alan Jackson's, Livin' On Love, George Strait's, One Night At A Time, Willie and Tobie Keith's, Beer For my Horses, Travis Tritt's, Country Club and Randy Travis's, Forever And Ever Amen.
All songs were delivered in fine style with John's excellent vocalising and Richard's and Raymond's superb instrumentation and backing vocals. Some of the other melodies worthy of note included Johnny Russell's 1973 hit, Rednecks,White Socks and Blue Ribbon Beer, Gene Autry's 1945 smash, Don't Fence Me In and I Recall A Gypsy Woman a country hit for Tommy Cash (Johnny's Brother) in 1973 and B.J.Thomas in 1981, but popularised here, of course, by Don Williams.
The Trio are returning here later in the year and I am sure they will attract another large crowd like tonight.
